The narrow peninsula of Placencia slithers down the southern coast of Belize like a snake. The eastern shoreline is 15 miles of continuous white sand beach. On the western side, a finger-shaped lagoon separates the peninsula from mainland Belize. Placencia village is a Creole fishing village with a laid-back attitude. Other charming villages are the Creole Independence, and the Garifuna Seine Bright.
Ambergris Caye is the largest of Belize's nearly 200 offshore cayes . Commuter planes (15- minute ride) and water taxis (1-hour ride) link it to Belize City. The airstrip is in the heart of town, so most resorts are just a jump away. This is the capital of carefree and casual: there are no paved roads, traffic lights, and no high-rise buildings. Although most resorts are beach-front, Ambergris is not a beach destination in the traditional sense.
Located in the Cayo District, San Ignacio features cathedral-like forests, shimmering emerald rivers, caves, mountains, cascading falls, and mighty ruins. It is here where the Mountain Pine Ridge and the Mopan and Macal rivers are located. The various lodges in the area offer diverse activities including hiking, trekking, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, and bird watching. It is also in this area where the Mayan ruins of Caracol and Xunantunich are located.
Located in the Cayo District, not far from San Ignacio, this natural reserve is comprised of 300 square miles of forest reserve. It is home to the Hidden Valley Falls (1,000 Foot Falls), the Rio On River, the Rio Pools, and the Rio Frio Cave and Nature Trail, as well as numerous small streams and waterfalls. The park offers a picturesque drive to those heading for Caracol.

Hopkins has one of Belize's few mainland beaches, and reclining with a cold beverage under a palm tree here can make the world go away for a while. If you're looking for more motion than a hammock swinging in the breeze, windsurfing and kayaking are easily organized. A stroll down the sandy village walkways to meet and chat with the locals can be a lot of fun and will give you a chance to really experience the place.
Orange Walk District and its principal town of the same name, are situated north of Belize City. Orange Walk Town is about 55 miles from Belize City. The main tourist attractions are the New River and the famous Mayan ruins of Lamanai. Mexican influence is evident and there are some Mennonite communities in the area.
Belmopan is the capital city of Belize. It is a small town situated just 1 hour west of the International airport. As the other inland areas in Belize, its main tourist attraction is its surrounding national parks, reserves, and rivers, where one can enjoy plenty of outdoor activities.
Belize City is the country's only urban genuine area. It is Belize's commercial hub, transportation, cultural center, main seaport and most populated region. It is the gateway to all the other tourist areas in the country. Belize City itself does not have many tourist attractions; overnight stays are mandatory only when you book an optional tour like Lamanai, the Panti Trail, etc. There are two airports. Domestic flights leave from both of them although flights from the domestic airport are less expensive.
The Turneffe Islands make up the largest atoll reef in Belize, with more than 200 mangrove islands, hosting a wealth of exotic marine life. With a bit of luck, you will be able to see the Whitespotted Toadfish, endemic to Belize. The Turneffe Island area is 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, and the underwater visibility is truly exceptional, making it a top destination for viewing eagle rays, dolphins, reef sharks and many other species.
